Suffolk County Releases COVID-19 Update on Hospitalizations and Fatalities

Suffolk County released an update on COVID-19 statistics on April 30, 2024, focusing on hospital admissions and fatalities. According to the CDC, hospital admission rates and the percentage of COVID-19 deaths among all deaths are now the primary surveillance metrics.

In the report, it was stated that there were 63 new hospital admissions of confirmed COVID-19 patients for the week ending on April 20, 2024, with a percent change of -4.5% from the prior week. The hospital admissions per 100k in the past week were reported at 2.2, indicating a low level of COVID-19 hospital admissions.

On April 30, 2024, Suffolk County provided a daily hospitalization summary, revealing that 21 individuals were hospitalized, with 47% of them being hospitalized due to COVID-19 or complications of COVID-19. Among the hospitalized individuals, 8 were new admissions since the last report, and 4 had been discharged. There were no patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at that time.

Regarding fatalities, there have been a total of 5,283 fatalities in Suffolk County since March 2020, with an increase of 1 since the last report. The annual breakdown of fatalities is as follows: 2,311 in 2020, 1,507 in 2021, 1,015 in 2022, 318 in 2023, and 137 in 2024 to date.

It is important to note that hospitals in the area are no longer reporting data to NYSDOH on weekends or holidays.

The COVID-19 Case Tracker for April 28, 2024, reported 50 cases, with 3.3 cases per 100k and a 7-day average of 2.8, including reported PCR and antigen tests.
