COVID-19 Hospitalization and Fatality Rates Decline in Suffolk County

Suffolk County released a COVID-19 update for the week of April 12-18, 2024, highlighting key statistics related to hospitalizations and fatalities. According to the CDC, hospital admission rates and the percentage of COVID-19 deaths among all deaths are now the primary surveillance metrics.

The data revealed that there were 66 new hospital admissions of confirmed COVID-19 patients in Suffolk County, with a 35.3% decrease from the previous week. The hospital admissions per 100k in the past week were reported at 2.3, indicating a low level of COVID-19 hospital admissions.

On April 18, 2024, 29 individuals were hospitalized in Suffolk County, with 69% of them being hospitalized due to COVID-19 or complications of the virus. Among them, 3 patients were in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Fatalities related to COVID-19 in Suffolk County as of April 18, 2024, reached a total of 5,279 since March 2020, with an increase of 1 since the last report. The annual fatality numbers show a decreasing trend over the years, with 2024 recording 133 fatalities to date.

In terms of new COVID-19 cases, 22 first-time cases were reported on April 18, 2024, with a rate of 1.44 cases per 100k. These numbers are part of the overall COVID-19 case tracker, which also includes testing data to monitor the spread of the virus in the county.

Suffolk County continues to provide COVID-19 testing and vaccination services to its residents. The department offers vaccines to uninsured and underinsured individuals through programs like New York State's Vaccines for Children and Vaccines for Adults. Those with insurance coverage for the COVID-19 vaccine are encouraged to receive their shots at local pharmacies, healthcare providers' offices, or federally qualified health centers.
