Art M. Lee has been named chief campus counsel at Stony Brook University, with his appointment effective January 15. The announcement was made by President Andrea Goldsmith in a message to the university community on January 9.
Lee brings nearly three decades of experience in higher education law, most recently serving at the University of Arizona. There, he managed legal matters for the institution, including its academic medical center. During his tenure at the University of Arizona, Lee spent over ten years in the Office of General Counsel as deputy general counsel and later as vice president and deputy general counsel starting in 2021. He advised leadership on a range of legal and administrative issues and provided counsel to the University of Arizona Health Sciences.
At Stony Brook, Lee will report to both President Goldsmith and Kapil Longani, SUNY’s senior vice chancellor for legal affairs and general counsel. He will lead the SUNY Stony Brook University Office of General Counsel regional office, which offers legal services not only to the campus but also to Stony Brook Medicine, its health sciences schools and hospitals, and the Long Island State Veterans Home.
President Goldsmith stated: “Art’s combination of higher education and healthcare legal expertise along with his collaborative leadership are well-suited to advancing Stony Brook’s mission. As Art settles into this role, I am certain that he will contribute meaningfully to Stony Brook’s continued growth and success.”
Lee expressed enthusiasm about joining Stony Brook: “I am thrilled and honored to be joining an exemplary team of attorneys in supporting a pre-eminent institution of higher education, The State University of New York at Stony Brook,” said Lee. “I am looking forward to getting to know the Stony Brook community and to be helping advance President Goldsmith’s bold vision and objectives for the future of Stony Brook University.”
Before his work at the University of Arizona, Lee held general counsel positions at Arizona State University and the University of Colorado. He holds a JD from the University of Colorado School of Law and a BA in Politics, Economics, Rhetoric and Law from the University of Chicago.
