Assemblywoman Jodi Giglio is advising residents of Long Island and the Rockaways to prepare for a winter storm expected to begin late Saturday, January 24, and continue through Monday. The storm is forecasted to bring heavy snow and very cold temperatures. PSEG Long Island has stated it is prepared to address possible power outages and hazardous conditions.
“While the snow expected with this system may be light and powdery, extreme cold and hazardous travel conditions can still pose risks to our communities,” said Giglio. “I encourage all residents to take storm preparations seriously, follow safety guidelines and know how to report power issues if they arise.”
Giglio highlighted that temperatures are likely to remain in the low 20s or below during the weekend. Although powdery snow does not typically threaten electrical infrastructure directly, icy roads and reduced visibility can increase accident risks that may impact utility equipment.
She advised residents to treat downed wires as live by staying at least six feet away from them, never run generators indoors or within 20 feet of windows, doors or vents, use long extension cords for outdoor generator placement, avoid unnecessary travel during hazardous conditions, and plan trips only if essential.
Giglio reminded constituents that power outages or emergencies can be reported directly to PSEG Long Island by calling 1‑800‑490‑0075 or through its mobile app and online portal. She also recommended signing up for MyAlerts text and email notifications for real-time updates.
“Preparation is key,” Giglio added. “Take a few moments now to make sure your home, family and neighbors are ready for cold weather and winter conditions. Stay safe and check on each other during this storm.”
