The Town of Brookhaven continued its annual effort to restore the native Northern Bobwhite Quail population with a release event on July 25 at the Longwood Estate in Ridge. This initiative, which has taken place for several years, is aimed at controlling garden and woodland pests naturally and supporting local biodiversity.
Councilman Michael Loguercio was joined by wildlife biologist Ranger Eric Powers from CEED, a nature center located in Brookhaven Hamlet, to lead the quail release. Together, they opened cages to introduce 100 Northern Bobwhite Quail into the estate’s habitat. The birds are expected to help reduce numbers of ticks, fleas, and other insects without relying on chemical pesticides.
“The return of the quail each year is more than symbolic—it’s practical,” said Councilman Loguercio. “This program helps protect both people and native wildlife, while preserving our land’s natural balance.”
The event took place on the grounds of Longwood Estate and attracted families, nature supporters, and those interested in sustainable practices. The quail release demonstrates Brookhaven’s ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship and conservation efforts.
