Congressman Nick LaLota of Suffolk County has expressed support for the passage of H.R. 1, known as the One Big, Beautiful Bill Act. The bill, which now awaits President Trump’s signature, is aimed at delivering substantial tax relief to middle-class families and investing in national security and workforce development.
LaLota highlighted the benefits for Long Island families: “This bill quadruples the SALT cap for five years, boosts the Child Tax Credit, eliminates taxes on tips and overtime, and delivers the biggest middle-class tax cut in decades.” He emphasized that a family earning $250,000 with $18,000 in property taxes could see an additional $5,000 in tax returns.
The legislation also aims to prevent a projected $1,700 tax increase under President Biden’s administration by expanding education savings accounts and creating newborn savings accounts while protecting Social Security and Medicare. LaLota stated that taxpayers deserve transparency over budget gimmicks.
Despite opposition from both sides of Congress concerning raising the SALT cap—criticized as either a “blue state bailout” or welfare for the wealthy—LaLota remained steadfast. “The SALT cap is now $40,000,” he noted as a victory for Long Island families.
The bill includes provisions such as eliminating taxes on tips and overtime pay; increasing the Child Tax Credit; expanding educational savings; addressing Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) issues; closing Medicaid loopholes; allocating funds for defense manufacturing; supporting agriculture; funding healthcare initiatives; reforming immigration processes; and investing in infrastructure improvements.
