Farmingville, NY – On May 31st, Councilwoman Jane Bonner participated in the VFW Post 6249 Joseph P. Dwyer 5K Run, an event dedicated to honoring U.S. veterans. The community gathering featured local veterans, families, and other members of the public who either ran or walked the course to pay tribute to those who have served.
The event was hosted by VFW Post 6249 and attracted a significant number of participants from across the region. It has become a tradition in Rocky Point, bringing together people of all ages for a meaningful cause.
The run supports the PFC Joseph P. Dwyer Veteran Peer Support Program. This initiative is named after Private First Class Joseph P. Dwyer, a Suffolk County native and Army combat medic in Iraq known for his heroic actions during a mission in Baghdad. Despite being honorably discharged after returning home, he faced challenges with post-traumatic stress, depression, and substance abuse until his passing in July 2008 at age 31.
Launched in late 2012, the Dwyer Program has provided peer-to-peer support for veterans facing similar issues and stands as a testament to PFC Dwyer’s legacy.
“This run is a beautiful example of how our community comes together to honor and remember our veterans,” said Councilwoman Bonner. “It’s a privilege to support the VFW and to stand with those who have given so much for our country.”
Post-race activities included refreshments, music, and a ceremony recognizing both veterans and event organizers at the VFW post. Proceeds will aid veteran services through VFW Post 6249.
Councilwoman Bonner expressed her appreciation towards the VFW for their ongoing leadership and dedication to advocating for veterans.
