Michael Clark, a 49-year-old resident of East Northport, recently reunited with his medical team at Huntington Hospital after surviving a critical heart condition that necessitated a transplant. Following a cruise in 2023, Clark experienced severe shortness of breath, which was linked to a previous Covid-19 infection. His condition was evaluated at Huntington Hospital and deemed life-threatening.

Leah Fow, MD, associate director of hospital medicine at the hospital, worked with a specialist to expedite Clark’s heart transplant at North Shore University Hospital. Six months later, a suitable donor heart was found for Clark. He has since made a strong recovery and is now an advocate for organ donation and supports other transplant patients.

Clark’s reunion with the hospital staff occurred during Huntington Hospital’s “Thank A Lifesaver” program, which allows patients to reconnect with their caregivers. During the event, he expressed deep gratitude toward his medical team, family, and his anonymous donor. Doctors have suggested that Covid-19 may have contributed to his rapid health decline.

Physician assistant Jon Lawson and Dr. Fow emphasized the significance of Clark’s advocacy efforts. Dr. Fow described his mentorship as “inspirational” amid the ongoing organ shortage crisis.
