More than $2 million in federal funding has been allocated for infrastructure upgrades at two Suffolk County airports, according to an announcement by Representative Nick LaLota (R-Suffolk County). The grants, provided through the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Infrastructure Grants program within the Department of Transportation, will be used for projects at Francis S. Gabreski Airport in Westhampton Beach and Elizabeth Field on Fishers Island.
“This is a major win for Suffolk County. Francis S. Gabreski Airport and Elizabeth Field are vital to our region’s transportation network, economy, and public safety. These investments will enhance safety, create jobs, and strengthen the infrastructure that keeps our communities connected and secure,” said Rep LaLota. “Long Islanders have notoriously paid more in taxes to Washington than we get back so it’s important we see an appropriate return in the form of federal infrastructure improvements. I’ll continue fighting to ensure Long Island receives the federal resources it needs and deserves.”
A grant of $1,163,000 will support Phase 3 of the tower reconstruction project at Gabreski Airport. Planned work includes site development, roofing installation, pavement improvements, tree removal, and architectural interior finishings. The airport serves as both a civilian and military hub on Long Island and houses the New York Air National Guard’s 106th Rescue Wing.
Francis S. Gabreski Air National Guard Base was involved in efforts to respond to wildfires on Long Island’s East End earlier this year. As fires from the Pine Barrens approached the base in March 2025, members of the 106th Rescue Wing deployed ground and air resources to help control the blaze.
Elizabeth Field on Fishers Island will receive $924,459 for its final phase of runway and lighting system reconstruction. Upgrades include reconstructing runway end identifier lights for Runways 12/30 and 7/25, rehabilitating existing lighting on both runways, and reconstructing airfield signage.
Elizabeth Field provides a critical transportation link for Fishers Island residents, businesses, and emergency services.
