Marking the anniversary of the execution of three American citizens, Congressman Nick LaLota has reintroduced a resolution in the House of Representatives. The resolution demands accountability for the murders of Ylli, Agron, and Mehmet Bytyqi during the Kosovo War. LaLota calls on the U.S. government to press Serbia to investigate and prosecute those responsible.
“We honor the memory of Ylli, Agron, and Mehmet Bytyqi—with heavy hearts and unshaken resolve. To mark the solemn anniversary of their tragic loss, I am reintroducing H. Con. Res. 41 to reaffirm Congress’s commitment: those responsible for the execution of three young American brothers must be held to account,” said LaLota. “Justice delayed is justice denied—but today, we send a clear message: we will not rest until the Bytyqi family receives the truth, the accountability, and the closure that has been too long withheld.”
The Bytyqi brothers were from Hampton Bays and traveled overseas in 1999 to provide humanitarian assistance after the Kosovo War. They were arrested by Serbian authorities after accidentally crossing into Serbian-controlled territory and later executed.
Despite investigations over two decades, no one has been held accountable for their murders. In 2018, Serbian official Goran Radosavljevic was sanctioned by the U.S. State Department for his role in human rights abuses related to these events.
LaLota’s resolution emphasizes that those responsible must be brought to justice and criticizes Serbia’s lack of progress in prosecuting those involved. It urges continued U.S. support in monitoring Serbia’s efforts and suggests this case should impact future U.S.-Serbia relations.
