Congressman Nick LaLota from Suffolk County, New York, has announced his support for H.R. 2056, the District of Columbia Federal Immigration Compliance Act of 2025. The legislation aims to prevent Washington, D.C., from implementing policies that would restrict law enforcement from sharing information regarding an individual’s citizenship or immigration status with federal, state, or local authorities. It also seeks to ensure compliance with ICE detainer requests.
In a statement following the vote, Rep. LaLota expressed his approval: “I proudly voted for the District of Columbia Federal Immigration Compliance Act because our nation’s capital—the seat of our laws—should never be a sanctuary for lawlessness,” he said. He emphasized that the bill is designed to prevent any obstruction in cooperation with federal immigration authorities such as DHS and ICE.
LaLota urged other communities across the country to reject sanctuary policies: “Whether it’s D.C., Long Island, or any other part of the country, no community should shield individuals who violate our immigration laws,” he stated. He called on local governments to join efforts in restoring order and enforcing immigration laws while respecting legal immigrants and protecting American communities.
The House passed H.R. 2056 on June 12, 2025, with a vote tally of 224–194. The bill was sponsored by Representative Clay Higgins and is currently under review by the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. It mandates that D.C. authorities must share immigration status information and comply with DHS detainer requests unless exceptions apply for crime victims and witnesses.
