Northwell’s Mather Hospital in Port Jefferson, NY, has been recognized by the American Heart Association (AHA) for its commitment to heart attack care. The hospital received two awards and contributed to a regional recognition.

Mather Hospital was awarded the Get With The Guidelines – Coronary Artery Disease NSTEMI Gold award for its rapid, research-based care for non-ST elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) patients. It also earned the Get With The Guidelines – Coronary Artery Disease STEMI Receiving Center Gold award for treating ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), which is more severe than other heart attacks.

The 2025 Mission: Lifeline Systems of Care Regional Award acknowledged Mather’s adherence to AHA quality performance standards, with its success in treating STEMIs contributing to the region’s accolade.

“Mather Hospital is dedicated to improving the quality of heart attack care and the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines program helps us achieve that goal,” said President Kevin McGeachy. “The program puts proven knowledge and guidelines to work on a daily basis so patients have the best possible chance of survival.”

Since opening its Cardiac Catheterization Lab in 2021 and an Electrophysiology Lab in 2022, Mather has met or exceeded AHA guidelines for timely treatment of heart attack patients. The hospital averages 42 STEMI cases per year.

Abhinav Goyal, M.D., volunteer chair of the AHA Coronary Artery Disease System of Care Advisory Group, emphasized adherence to guidelines during NSTEMI events as crucial. “In the event of an NSTEMI heart attack, adherence to the American Heart Association’s guidelines is critical. These guidelines include specific recommendations for in-hospital care and cardiac rehabilitation post-discharge,” he said.

Recognition as a STEMI Receiving Center highlights hospitals providing 24/7 support for STEMIs through coordinated networks with referring hospitals and emergency services. Dr. Goyal noted that effective and timely care is essential during such events.

Mather Hospital offers various health services as a community teaching hospital with numerous accolades from Medicare & Medicaid Services and U.S. News & World Report among others.
