Northwell’s Mather Hospital has become the first hospital in the United States to receive accreditation from the Surgical Review Corporation (SRC) as a Center of Excellence in Bariatric Revision Surgery. The hospital also earned re-accreditation as a Center of Excellence in Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery and Robotic Surgery. Arif Ahmad, MD, was recognized as a Master Surgeon in Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, Robotic Surgery, and Bariatric Revision Surgery.

The SRC accreditation process involves a detailed evaluation to ensure hospitals and surgeons meet standards for surgical volume, facility equipment, clinical pathways, standardized operating procedures, patient education, and continuous quality assessment. The review includes onsite inspections where staff are educated on best practices to improve care.

“This is a truly historic moment for Mather Hospital,” said Kevin McGeachy, president of Mather Hospital. “Achieving SRC re-accreditation is always a significant marker of quality, but to also be recognized as the first Center of Excellence in Bariatric Revision Surgery in the entire country is nothing short of groundbreaking. It is a profound testament to the unparalleled dedication, innovative spirit and tireless work of every single member of our phenomenal team, and we are incredibly proud of Dr. Arif Ahmad for his well-deserved Master Surgeon distinction. We are not just raising the bar; we are setting a new national standard for specialized patient care.”

Dr. Arif Ahmad commented on the significance of using robotic techniques: “Revisional bariatric surgery requires special surgical skills, and the procedure is made more precise and safer with the robotic approach.”

Gary M. Pratt, CEO of SRC, noted: “We’re proud to recognize Mather Hospital for its commitment to advancing and providing quality care for all patients. This accreditation signals that this facility is among the best in this specialty and is dedicated to delivering the highest level of care possible.”

SRC has accredited Mather’s bariatric surgery program every three years since 2007 and its robotic surgery program since 2016.

Mather Hospital serves Suffolk County residents as an accredited 249-bed community teaching hospital offering various healthcare services. It has received multiple recognitions including top ratings from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services for outcomes and patient experience, Magnet recognition from the American Nurses Credentialing Center for nursing excellence, high performance ratings by U.S. News & World Report in gastroenterology/GI surgery and pulmonology/lung surgery specialties, inclusion among America’s 250 best hospitals by Healthgrades over several years, and Healthgrades’ Outstanding Patient Experience Award.

Northwell Health operates 28 hospitals across New York and Connecticut with more than 1,000 outpatient facilities serving over three million people annually. Northwell is New York State’s largest private employer with over 104,000 employees.

Surgical Review Corporation was established in 2003 as an independent nonprofit focused on improving surgical care worldwide by accrediting top-performing hospitals and professionals who meet their standards.
