Nathaniel Woodhull Elementary School fifth-grade students recently participated in a hands-on learning experience with seniors from Karisa Beyer’s senior Cosmetology class. During the visit, Ms. Beyer gave a presentation about the cosmetology industry, including career options and activities involved in the academy.

After the presentation, each fifth grader was paired with a senior cosmetology student to practice braiding techniques on mannequins. The elementary students also had their hair styled by the high schoolers, choosing from four types of braids or having colorful tinsel added.

“This collaboration gave the senior cosmetology students a fun way to practice their skills and the fifth-grade students a chance to make some new friends from the high school and see one of the many exciting learning opportunities that await them as high schoolers!”

The William Floyd Cosmetology Academy offers a two-year program that prepares students for New York State licensing through 1,000 hours of instruction and practical experience in various aspects of cosmetology. The curriculum covers hairstyling, coloring, cutting, skin care, nail technology, makeup, braiding, chemical texturizing and hair extensions. Students also attend events such as guest speaker sessions and industry shows. Upon completion of the program, students are eligible to take state licensing exams.
