Congressman Nick LaLota, who represents New York’s 1st district in the U.S. Congress, posted a series of updates on his official social media account addressing public safety, veterans’ affairs, and honoring firefighters.
On May 3, LaLota reported on a recent criminal case involving an immigrant defendant: “A Honduran national, Jose Ignacio Bonilla Garcia, has been charged with raping an unconscious man in Amityville and brutally beating him when he resisted. He now faces prosecution and deportation. Cases like this show why cooperation between all levels of law enforcement is” (May 3, 2026).
The following day, LaLota highlighted bipartisan progress on federal legislation supporting veterans: “As a member of the House Appropriations Committee, I’m proud we advanced the FY27 MILCON-VA bill with a bipartisan and unanimous 58–0 vote, fully funding Veterans’ care, supporting military families, and modernizing our bases.” (May 4, 2026).
Also on May 4—International Firefighters’ Day—LaLota acknowledged the service and sacrifice of firefighters: “Today, on International Firefighters’ Day, we honor those who run toward danger to protect our communities and remember those who gave their lives in the line of duty. From Suffolk’s volunteer departments to FDNY and all who served in the 9/11 response and recovery,” (May 4, 2026).
Nick LaLota has served as U.S. Representative for New York’s 1st District since replacing Lee Zeldin in 2023. Born in Bay Shore in 1978 and currently residing in Amityville at age 44, LaLota has emphasized local community issues throughout his tenure.
