Congressman Nick LaLota, representing New York’s 1st District since 2023, has been vocal on several issues affecting his constituents. His recent statements on social media address tax policy, local business achievements, and Medicaid program reforms.
On June 2, 2025, Congressman LaLota highlighted the benefits of increasing the State and Local Tax (SALT) deduction cap for Long Island residents. He stated “Too much SALT may be bad for your diet — but on Long Island, it’s great for your wallet.” He is advocating to quadruple the SALT cap to $40K, which he claims will benefit 92% of his constituents. He called upon the Senate to provide “real relief for middle-class families.”
Later that day, LaLota expressed pride in welcoming Oysterponds Shellfish of Orient to a House Small Business Showcase. In his tweet from June 2nd, he mentioned “As a member of @HouseSmallBiz, I was proud to welcome Oysterponds Shellfish of Orient—the largest oyster farm on Long Island—to the House Small Business Showcase.” He praised them as an example of “local hard work, innovation, and sustainability.”
In another statement made on June 2nd regarding Medicaid policies, Congressman LaLota supported work requirements for able-bodied adults receiving Medicaid benefits. He argued that “Work requirements for able-bodied adults on Medicaid aren’t cuts—they’re common sense.” According to him, these measures protect those truly in need while saving taxpayers billions.
Nick LaLota was born in Bay Shore in 1978 and currently resides in Amityville. He succeeded Lee Zeldin as a U.S. Congress member in 2023.
