Congressman Nick LaLota, representing New York’s 1st district since 2023, recently shared several updates on his legislative priorities and stance on key issues via social media. The congressman emphasized his commitment to Long Island and his independent approach in Congress.
On June 20, 2025, LaLota tweeted about his ranking as an independent legislator: “I put Long Island FIRST—that’s why @RollCall ranked me more independent than 95% of House Republicans. I’m focused on delivering for Suffolk County, not playing partisan games.”
Later that day, he addressed the issue of the State and Local Tax (SALT) deduction cap in another tweet: “If Senate Republicans cut even a penny from the House’s $40K SALT deal, I’ll vote no on the final bill. The $10K cap from 2017 helped pay for TCJA 1—my middle-class constituents won’t pay again for TCJA 2.”
In a subsequent post, LaLota elaborated on the importance of maintaining a balanced approach to tax legislation: “As I said on @SquawkCNBC this AM: The House’s $40K SALT cap is key to unlocking the rest of OBBB. It strikes the right balance—preserving 2017 Trump tax cuts, adding work requirements, and keeping Medicaid sustainable.”
Nick LaLota was born in Bay Shore, New York in 1978 and currently resides in Amityville. He took office following Lee Zeldin’s departure from Congress.
