Northwell’s Mather Hospital announced on Apr. 13 that the annual Northwell Walk to Raise Health will take place on Sunday, May 17, in Port Jefferson. The event aims to support breast cancer awareness and encourages regular screening mammography starting at age 40.

The walk is designed to bring together families, friends, and team members for a five-mile route through the villages of Port Jefferson and Belle Terre. Activities planned for the day include music, raffles, photo opportunities, a walker warm-up session, and the Pink Your Pooch contest for dogs. Check-in opens at 8:30 a.m., with the walk beginning at 10 a.m.

According to organizers, breast cancer remains the most common cancer among women in the United States except for skin cancers. It accounts for about one-third of all new female cancers each year. The average risk of an American woman developing breast cancer during her lifetime is approximately one in eight.

Participants are encouraged to walk in honor or memory of those affected by breast cancer or as survivors themselves. Fundraising efforts are part of the event; participants can begin earning rewards by raising $100 or more.

Mather Hospital is described as an accredited non-profit community teaching hospital with recognition from various organizations for quality care and patient experience. Northwell Health serves New York and Connecticut residents through its network of hospitals and outpatient facilities.
