On May 31, Councilwoman Jane Bonner organized a special recycling event at the Rose Caracappa Senior Center in Mount Sinai. The event saw an unprecedented turnout of residents dedicated to responsible waste disposal. Images from the event featured Deputy Sheriff Shannon Smith, Councilwoman Bonner, Deputy Sheriff Christopher Holfester, and Deputy Sheriff Melfi.
The event ran from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM, allowing residents to drop off paper, cardboard, electronics, and unwanted medications. A total of 615 vehicles participated, marking the highest attendance for one of Bonner’s recycling events.
By the end of the day, participants had shredded 16,300 pounds of paper and recycled 11,280 pounds of electronic waste. Additionally, they turned in 15 boxes of unused or expired medications for safe disposal.
Councilwoman Bonner expressed gratitude towards all who contributed to the event’s success. “I’m so proud of how our residents came together to make this event such a success,” said Bonner. “These efforts not only help protect our environment but also show how strong our community is when we work together toward a common goal.”
Suffolk County Sheriff’s deputies assisted with medication disposal and managed traffic flow from Route 25A to ensure safety and efficiency.
