More than 5,000 spectators gathered at Roth Pond on May 2 for the 36th annual Roth Regatta at Stony Brook University. This year’s theme was Greek Mythology, sparking creativity among participants.
The event, organized by the Undergraduate Student Government (USG), required teams to construct boats using cardboard, duct tape, string, and paint. Boats competed in two categories: Speedster (two-person) and Yacht (four-person). Judging criteria included design, spirit, endurance, originality, and ability to complete a 200-yard race across the pond.
Brandon Ma, a senior majoring in technological systems management and USG AV director said, “The Roth Pond Regatta is a huge celebration for all students. We’re all just here to get together as students to become a family and celebrate the end of the semester.”
Ideal weather conditions with sunny skies and temperatures near 80 degrees Fahrenheit contributed to the event’s success. Over 90 boats participated in initial heats followed by semifinal and final rounds. Designs were inspired by mythological figures such as Trojan horses and Ares’ war chariot.
A notable entry was Phoenix Rising from the Cybersecurity Club. Kevin Wang, a senior electrical engineering major said their president liked phoenixes and noted they learned from past mistakes not to build last minute. Steven Nyman emphasized teamwork’s importance saying “Trusting your teammates is very important.”
In the Speedster division Scuderia Scooteroni achieved their third consecutive win. The team advised future participants to seek out warehouses for surplus cardboard.
In the Yacht division The Spirit of Stony Brook won over last year’s champions VESO. They commented on maintaining energy through races stating “The second race was tough — we used a lot of energy in the first — but we kept our rowing in sync and had a technique going.”
Christine Marullo director of Student Engagement remarked “The Roth Regatta is more than just a race it’s a testament to creativity perseverance and the unbreakable spirit of our Seawolves.” She highlighted this year’s large turnout with students faculty staff cheering teams on.
Alongside boat races attendees enjoyed music giveaways food prizes plus live-streaming via YouTube Facebook by School of Communication Journalism Stony Brook Media Group.
