Salvatore Riccobono served in the United States Army Medical Corps from 1965 to 1967, achieving the rank of Specialist E-4. During his time in Vietnam from May 1966 to May 1967, he was part of a combat support group for helicopter medical evacuation and the 93rd Evacuation Hospital. His duties included participating in medevac missions and humanitarian flights to remote Montagnard villages, which lacked roads, electricity, or running water.
After completing his military service, Riccobono became a New York City Police Officer. He was assigned to the East Village on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, where he worked for over a decade in a plainclothes unit to remove dangerous criminals from the streets.
In 1977, Riccobono joined the American Legion in Queens, New York. After moving to St. James in 1999, he continued his involvement and became a member of VFW Post 395 (Sgt. John W. Cooke Post) in 2000. He currently serves as Junior Vice Commander and has organized Memorial Day and Veterans Day parades in St. James for over ten years.
Riccobono is also involved with the Greater St. James Civic Association and the Fraternal Order of Police. His life has been dedicated to defending freedoms through service and sacrifice.
He shares his life with his wife Patty Murray Riccobono and is the father of two sons, James and Daniel. He adores his daughters-in-law Suzanne and Maryvic and is blessed with five grandchildren: Max, Molly, Brady, Emelyn, and Luca.
His life reflects service to country, community, and family.
