SBU Eats by CulinArt announced on Apr. 7 a new partnership with Suffolk County Community College to launch an internship program for Culinary Arts students at Stony Brook University’s dining facilities.
The initiative is designed to give SCCC students hands-on experience in a professional kitchen environment, helping them develop their skills and prepare for future careers in the culinary field.
According to Suanne Agugliaro, SBU Eats director of training and development, “Participating in a culinary internship program is something I am truly passionate about. When I attended The Culinary Institute of America, completing an externship was a program requirement. That experience helped guide my career and gave me invaluable hands-on training. Now, as a trainer on this campus, I can provide the same opportunity for young talent to learn and explore their potential. Helping shape the next generation of culinarians is incredibly rewarding.” Two SCCC Culinary Arts students were selected through an interview process to begin their paid internships during the spring semester. The internships last 16 weeks and represent the students’ first real experience working on a professional cooking line.
Adriana Carrero, an intern at Roth Café, said, “It’s the people that make it more fun.” She added that she has always loved cooking: “I started cooking with my mother; for me, cooking is the best way to express myself.” Carrero enjoys preparing Puerto Rican cuisine but also values learning about other international dishes served at Stony Brook University.
Another intern, David Soledad, works twice weekly at East Side Dining—a facility serving approximately 4,000 guests daily. This busy setting provides valuable exposure for interns while being supported by friendly staff members.
The new internship marks what organizers describe as a strong start to collaboration between SBU Eats by CulinArt and Suffolk County Community College.
