New York State Senators are calling for an immediate review of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s (MTA) contract with Allied Universal Security Services. This $35 million agreement, made in 2022 with the Pennsylvania-based firm, was intended to address fare evasion by deploying armed guards across New York City’s subway system.

Senator Mario R. Mattera expressed concerns about the lack of transparency surrounding this contract, stating, “This is the latest example of MTA mismanagement and is deeply troubling.” Senate Republican Leader Rob Ortt added that the deal “shows an alarming lack of oversight and transparency.”

The senators’ letter to Governor Kathy Hochul requests a thorough investigation into who approved this contract and how much taxpayer money has been spent. They also question the impact on existing MTA personnel and whether local workers were bypassed in favor of out-of-state hires.

Reports have surfaced regarding issues with these guards, including allegations of sleeping on duty and failing to prevent fare evasion. Senator Dean Murray criticized the decision to hire an out-of-state company, saying it led to worsening fare evasion problems.

Senator Steve Rhoads highlighted a pattern of approving large contracts without accountability, citing this as another example following other controversial deals. Senator Patricia Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick called for clear answers on why Allied Universal was chosen.

Other senators echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the need for greater transparency and accountability from both the MTA and Governor Hochul’s administration.
