The Stony Brook East Hampton Emergency Department (SB EHED) has opened its doors, aiming to alleviate the patient load at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital’s Emergency Department (SBSH ED). This development is expected to enhance access to critical care for residents and visitors in areas such as Hampton Bays, Quogue, Westhampton, Flanders, and Riverhead.

“The Stony Brook East Hampton Emergency Department is successfully managing the critical needs of those who live furthest east on the South Fork, which has resulted in the planned lessening of patient volume at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital’s Emergency Department,” stated Darin Wiggins, Vice Chair and Site Director for Emergency Medicine at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital. “This allows for an increase in admittance to our Southampton ED for those further west, who are in need of emergency care.”

Stony Brook Southampton Hospital stands as a Level III Trauma Center and a primary Stroke Center. It is one of only 16 hospitals in New York state to achieve three consecutive Leapfrog A grades for safety. The hospital boasts a Cath Lab for heart procedures, advanced robotic-assisted surgical systems, laser-targeted prostate cancer treatment, and a hyperbaric wound care center. These services are delivered by skilled specialists from Stony Brook.

“Providing 24/7 emergency services in East Hampton is part of Stony Brook Medicine’s commitment to expand access to world-class healthcare throughout the East End,” said Emily Mastaler, Chief Administrative Officer at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital. “In addition to serving those in the Town of East Hampton, the East Hampton Emergency Department helps to reduce emergent patient volume in the Southampton ED, particularly during the busy summer season when the population on the South Fork increases three times that of the colder and winter months.”

Sheryll Allbright, RN and Director of the Emergency Department at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital added: “Our emergency departments in East Hampton and Southampton are fully staffed with highly skilled and dedicated Stony Brook Medicine emergency specialists and professionals who are ready to provide critical care.”

The SB EHED is located at 400 Pantigo Place in East Hampton. It holds the distinction of being Suffolk County’s only off-campus freestanding Emergency Department. Meanwhile, SBSH ED can be accessed via Lewis Street between Meeting House Lane and Herrick Road in Southampton. Both locations offer accessible parking options.

Stony Brook Southampton Hospital offers 120 beds with over 280 physicians across 48 medical specialties providing various clinical services from primary care to specialized surgeries like cardiac catheterization. As Long Island’s South Fork sole provider of emergency care designated as a Level III Trauma Center and primary stroke center; it includes multiple centers such as The Phillips Family Cancer Center among others.

Stony Brook Medicine integrates education with research alongside patient care through five Health Sciences schools along with several hospitals including more than 200 community-based healthcare settings across Suffolk County.
