Stony Brook University Hospital (SBUH) and Stony Brook Southampton Hospital (SBSH) have each earned an “A” Hospital Safety Grade for Spring 2025 from The Leapfrog Group. This organization is an independent national nonprofit watchdog that focuses on patient safety. Leapfrog assigns grades to hospitals nationally based on more than 30 performance measures that include aspects such as errors, accidents, injuries, and infections, alongside the systems hospitals use to prevent these issues.

William A. Wertheim, MD, executive vice president for Stony Brook Medicine, stated, “Earning these ‘A’ grades from The Leapfrog Group affirms our ongoing commitment to providing safe, high-quality care.” He added that the achievement is a reflection of the healthcare team’s dedication to patient safety.

Carol Gomes, chief executive officer of Stony Brook University Hospital, commented, “This top mark is a reflection of how deeply every member of the Stony Brook team cares about our patients.” She emphasized the consistent high standard of care provided by the team, highlighting the quality and safety of the services available to the local community.

This is the second consecutive “A” for Stony Brook University Hospital and the third in a row for Stony Brook Southampton Hospital. This accomplishment ranks Stony Brook Southampton among only 16 hospitals in New York State to have received three consecutive “A” grades.

Stony Brook Southampton Hospital’s chief administrative officer, Emily Mastaler, expressed pride in the hospital’s safety record, noting, “This spring ‘A’ grade, follows our fall and spring 2024 ‘As’, and represents the dedication of every one of our team members, who work 24/7, year-round, to ensure our patients’ safety.”

Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group, commented, “Achieving an ‘A’ Hospital Safety Grade reflects enormous dedication to patient safety,” congratulating the hospitals for prioritizing patient care.

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is a unique ratings program focusing solely on avoidable medical errors, infections, and injuries. More than 500 patients die from such incidents daily in the United States. The program is peer-reviewed, transparent, and open to the public, with updates in the fall and spring.
