Stony Brook University’s Associate Vice President for Government Relations, Carl Mills III, and Stony Brook Council Member Linda Armyn have been named to City & State’s inaugural Long Island Trailblazers list. The recognition highlights individuals across higher education, business, politics, labor, and social activism on Long Island.
Mills has played a central role in securing significant funding for the university. His experience includes nearly 15 years in the state Senate, which he has used to advance Stony Brook’s academic, medical, and research interests. His responsibilities cover two campuses, four hospitals, more than 200 outpatient facilities, and the Long Island State Veterans Home. Among his recent efforts are obtaining $300 million in research capital and legislative approval for campus housing projects. He also helped secure $6.5 million for a quantum internet testbed and was instrumental in establishing Stony Brook as the anchor institution for The New York Climate Exchange.
Linda Armyn serves on the Stony Brook Council and is president and CEO of FourLeaf Federal Credit Union. She became the first woman to lead the organization in August 2023 and oversaw its rebranding this year to signal growth and community engagement. Under her leadership, FourLeaf has grown to over $13 billion in assets and developed “FourLeaf Cares,” which invests over $2 million annually into communities with modest means. Armyn also co-chairs the Long Island Regional Economic Development Council and is a member of the Long Island State Park Commission.
