Stony Brook University was prominently featured at the 2025 Press Club of Long Island Media Awards. The event, which took place on June 5 at Fox Hollow in Woodbury, recognized exceptional work in local print, broadcast, and online journalism across various categories.
Liza N. Burby, features editor for Stony Brook Magazine, received multiple accolades. She won second place for Narrative/Reporter of the Year for her contributions to both the magazine and Newsday. Additionally, Burby secured first place in Narrative/Real Estate for AARP Magazine and claimed first and third places in Narrative/Arts with articles published in Newsday. Her work also earned her third place in Narrative/Race and Diversity.
Beth Squire from SBU News achieved third place in Narrative/Education Reporting with her piece titled “Addressing the Mental Health Needs of Stony Brook Student Athletes.”
Student journalists from Stony Brook were also successful, garnering a total of 14 awards. The Statesman received eight awards in Student Journalism categories, including first for Best College News Website and top placements in Investigative and Narrative/News Story categories. It placed second for Best College Newspaper and earned additional accolades in other narrative categories.
The Stony Brook Press achieved first place for both Narrative/Best Magazine and Visual/Magazine cover design. It also secured second place for Best Website and third place in Student Journalism Narrative/News Story.
The Stony Brook Media Group took home first prize for Student Journalism/Video Feature Package and second prize for Student Journalism/Best College TV Reporter with Miles Reese’s contributions.
WUSB-FM won three awards; Play It Forward secured first place for Radio/Solutions Journalism and second place for Podcast. WUSB also ranked third in Radio/Environment.
WSHU Public Radio’s Long Island News Bureau — collaborating closely with the School of Communication and Journalism — received three awards: first place as Best Radio News Station, first for Podcast (Off the Path), and second for Radio/Environment. The bureau has been integrated into the campus since 2020, mentoring over 35 interns from Stony Brook.
The Press Club of Long Island is a significant chapter within the Society of Professional Journalists. Its mission includes advocating First Amendment rights, promoting ethical standards, and offering ongoing training to its members.
This year’s ceremony included new inductees into the Long Island Journalism Hall of Fame: John Hildebrand, Ellen Mitchell, and Timothy Bolger.
