Stony Brook University announced on April 18 that its annual Earthstock celebration will take place from Monday, April 20 through Friday, April 24. The event is set to bring together students, faculty, staff, and the local community to focus on sustainability, environmental awareness, and climate action.

Earthstock features a range of interactive events and educational programs designed to showcase Stony Brook’s commitment to environmental stewardship. The university said the initiative aims to inspire sustainable practices in daily life and reflects broader efforts such as energy conservation, recycling programs, research projects, educational outreach, and community engagement.

The week will begin with a keynote address by Patricia Wright, Distinguished Service Professor of Anthropology and Herrnstein Professor of Conservation Biology. Wright is also the founder and director of both the Centre ValBio Research Station in Madagascar and the Institute of Conservation of Tropical Environments. Her talk titled “Resilience in a Changing World” is scheduled for Monday at 5 pm at the Charles B. Wang Center Theater.

According to organizers, Wright’s presentation will discuss Madagascar as an example of resilience amid challenges like climate change and deforestation. She will share her experiences discovering new species of lemurs, establishing a national park in Madagascar, exploring fossil history on the island nation, and examining how communities are adapting through conservation efforts.

Other highlights include Water Fest 2026 on Wednesday at the Academic Mall Fountain from 12:30-2 pm. Hosted by Student Affairs Vice President Rick Gatteau alongside the Provost’s Office, Water Fest aims to explore water as an ecological force while encouraging artistic expression around water issues.

The festivities conclude Friday with the Earthstock Festival Street Fair from 11 am to 3 pm on Academic Mall. This event features student clubs, campus organizations, academic departments presenting exhibits and live entertainment.
