Stony Brook University Hospital has been ranked among the top 10 hospitals in New York State for 2025-26 by U.S. News & World Report. The hospital rose to No. 10 overall in the state, moving up from its previous ranking of No. 12 last year. Out of more than 203 hospitals statewide, Stony Brook University Hospital is one of only 14 with six or more high-performing or nationally ranked adult specialties.

Nationally, Stony Brook University Hospital was recognized as high performing in six adult specialties: Gastroenterology & GI Surgery, Geriatrics, Neurology & Neurosurgery, Orthopedics, Pulmonology & Lung Surgery, and Urology. Only 96 hospitals out of over 4,400 analyzed received high performance marks or rankings in six or more adult specialties.

“We are deeply honored to be acknowledged by U.S. News for our dedication to delivering outstanding patient care,” said Dr. William Wertheim, Executive Vice President of Stony Brook Medicine. “This recognition reflects the trust our community places in us and the expertise, compassion, and dedication our caregivers bring to every patient, every day. We are proud to serve this community with continued excellence and integrity.”

“We are profoundly thankful to our staff and physicians—the backbone of our healthcare system—whose dedication to our patients has earned these honors and continues to inspire us daily,” said Carol Gomes, MS, FACHE, CPHQ, Chief Executive Officer at Stony Brook University Hospital. “It’s truly fulfilling to lead and collaborate with a team that prioritizes patients and their families in everything we do.”

The evaluation process included data from several facilities within the Stony Brook Medicine healthcare system: Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, Stony Brook Children’s Hospital and Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital.

Ben Harder, chief of health analysis and managing editor at U.S. News & World Report stated: “For most Americans, health care decisions are made close to home. The Best Regional Hospitals rankings underscore the difference high-performing local medical centers make. These local hospital rankings, entirely performance-driven, equip individuals and their families, in consultation with their medical providers, to choose the highest quality care available in their own communities.”

U.S. News evaluated more than 4,400 hospitals using objective measures such as risk-adjusted mortality rates and preventable complications along with nursing care levels when determining its Best Hospitals list (https://health.usnews.com/best-hospitals/rankings). Its specialty rankings use data from over 800 million records of patient care (https://health.usnews.com/health-care/best-hospitals/articles/best-hospitals-specialty-rankings-methodology). This year’s methodology added new ratings for Heart Arrhythmia and Pacemaker Implantation among a total of 22 procedure ratings (https://health.usnews.com/health-care/best-hospitals/articles/how-us-news-ranked-the-best-hospitals-for-procedures-and-conditions).
