Stony Brook University will hold a blood drive on February 16 in partnership with the New York Blood Center. The event is scheduled from 11 am to 8 pm at the Student Activities Center Ballroom A. This initiative is part of the State University of New York (SUNY)’s observance of National Blood Donor Month, which takes place in January.
SUNY and its campuses are working with organizations such as the American Red Cross, ConnectLife, and the New York Blood Center to organize blood drives across the state. These efforts aim to promote civic engagement and help maintain an adequate supply of blood for those in need.
“SUNY students, faculty and staff are always ready to take action and help those in need. Together with our non-profit partners, SUNY campuses are making it easy for students and community members to donate blood and help save lives,” said SUNY Chancellor John B. King Jr. “Civic engagement is an essential outcome of higher education. From addressing the recent food insecurity crisis to organizing and donating at blood drives, SUNY students, faculty and staff are always ready to take action and help those in need.”
Blood drives held at SUNY campuses are part of ongoing initiatives that encourage volunteerism among students and support communities throughout New York State.
Recent efforts by SUNY include participation by Empire State Service Corps members in Governor Hochul’s Day of Hunger Action during a period marked by food insecurity. In September 2025, Chancellor King announced a new group of Civil Discourse and Civic Education & Engagement Fellows who will work with faculty, staff, and administration to further promote civic engagement and civil discourse within SUNY institutions. Additionally, as of January 2025, a civic discourse component has been added to general education core competencies for all SUNY students.
