Hundreds of Stony Brook University community members gathered on April 15 to celebrate the Shirley Strum Kenny Arts Festival, which this year marked its 30th anniversary and coincided with the inauguration of President Andrea Goldsmith.

The festival is a longstanding tradition at Stony Brook University, bringing together students, faculty, and staff to celebrate creativity and campus spirit. This year’s event was especially significant as it symbolized both continuity and new leadership at the university.

Student artists sold handmade jewelry, prints, and crochet pieces across the Academic Mall while campus organizations provided information about resources available to attendees. The Spirit of Stony Brook marching band performed alongside cheerleaders and the dance team, adding energy to the celebration. Student athletes from all teams led a march through campus, reinforcing school pride beyond academics.

“The energy you bring to this joyous festival showcasing student creativity, cultural expression and artistic excellence is truly uplifting,” Goldsmith said. She also called this year’s event “even more special and historic” due to its milestone anniversary.

Director of Athletics Shawn Heilbron encouraged students to embrace opportunities ahead: “We have to continue to dream big, believe big and believe in one another,” Heilbron said. He described Goldsmith’s vision for the university as “bold” and “ambitious.” Alan Inkles, director of the Staller Center for the Arts, highlighted former president Shirley Strum Kenny’s legacy in expanding arts access on campus.

Goldsmith stressed that supporting the arts remains vital: “Recognizing the vital role the arts play not only in our community, but in people’s lives throughout the world, is essential to ensuring the arts continue to thrive,” she said.

As music played across campus during chants celebrating Stony Brook University’s status as New York’s top public university, participants reflected on how events like these help unite communities while honoring past leadership.
