Janet Hyunju Clarke, associate dean of research and learning at Stony Brook University Libraries, has been recognized as a 2025 Library Journal “Mover and Shaker.” The award was presented to her on June 30 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Clarke’s efforts have focused on supporting the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community at Stony Brook University through initiatives such as co-founding the AAPI Mentorship Network and AAPI Heritages Committee.

The Library Journal highlighted that before Clarke’s involvement, there was no campus club or celebration open to all students related to AAPI heritage. Clarke expressed her pride in receiving the award, saying she was inspired by previous recipients and those who work passionately within their areas of the library world.

Clarke emphasized the importance of mentorship for AAPI students, noting that it significantly impacts their self-confidence and achievements both academically and beyond. She said faculty and staff involved in these efforts form a supportive community that takes pride in graduates’ successes.

Miriam Tuliao from Penguin Random House nominated Clarke for the award, citing her contributions to education and librarianship. Tuliao noted Clarke’s leadership roles within organizations like the Asian Pacific American Librarians Association (APALA).

Belkacem Karim Boughida, Dean of SBU Libraries, praised Clarke’s work in creating a sense of belonging for AAPI students at Stony Brook. Hallie Rich, Editor-in-Chief of Library Journal, described this year’s Movers and Shakers as individuals advancing the library field through creativity and commitment.

This recognition follows Clarke’s receipt of the American Library Association’s Medal of Excellence earlier this year. She is currently the only faculty member from Stony Brook University to have received either honor.
