The Stony Brook Volunteer Ambulance Corps (SBVAC) has been a part of the campus community for 55 years, contributing to safety and healthcare delivery. The organization is comprised of over 50 active volunteers, operates under a nationally recognized medical director, and works in collaboration with Stony Brook University’s Division of Enterprise Risk Management and the Division of Student Affairs.
Recently, SBVAC’s commitment was highlighted at the 2025 National Collegiate EMS Conference held in Pittsburgh, PA. A group of 22 volunteers from SBVAC attended the event where they earned continuing medical education credits and contributed to the Journal of Collegiate EMS. At this conference, SBVAC received two notable recognitions.
Among 250 collegiate EMS agencies present, SBVAC was one of only five to receive the EMS Ready Campus Silver tier award. This achievement marks an advancement from their previous Bronze tier status and involved integrating an all-hazards EMS-specific annex into Stony Brook’s Emergency Operations Plan. Additionally, SBVAC was among the first six organizations to receive the MERIT (Modeling Excellence in Response, Innovation, and Training) recognition. These awards underscore SBVAC’s dedication to high standards in operations, training, community engagement, and care.
SBVAC remains committed to serving as a student-run volunteer organization focused on enhancing emergency response readiness within its community. Further information about their initiatives can be found at sbvac.org.
