Stony Brook wins third straight CAA Championship, advances to NCAA Tournament

The Stony Brook women’s lacrosse team secured its third consecutive CAA Championship on May 3 by defeating second-seeded Drexel with a score of 12-10 at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium. The Seawolves, ranked No. 19, have now amassed 11 conference championships, including three in the CAA and eight in America East, earning their spot in the NCAA Tournament for the 12th consecutive year.

As the top seed and hosts of the conference playoffs, Stony Brook celebrated another victory at their home arena. Charlotte Wilmoth led the scoring with five points, consisting of three goals and two assists. Isabella Caporuscio, Alexandra Fusco, and Kylie Budke each scored two goals. Additional goals were made by Riley McDonald, Casey Colbert, and Courtney Maclay.

Defensive efforts were highlighted by Avery Hines, who caused six turnovers, breaking the program’s single-season record, which she set herself last year. Her performance set a new record of 67 caused turnovers in a season for the team.

Four players from Stony Brook were recognized for their performances in the tournament, earning spots on the All-Championship Team: Kylie Budke, Isabella Caporuscio, Allie Masera, and Molly LaForge. Budke was also named the Most Outstanding Performer.

The Seawolves, who currently hold a 29-game winning streak in conference and conference tournament games as CAA members, have been led by head coach Joe Spallina to an impressive 23-1 record in conference tournament games. Their conference tournament win streak now extends to 22 games.

Following the selection show on May 4, Stony Brook learned they would face Loyola Maryland (13-6) in their NCAA Tournament opener on May 9 at 4 pm in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. The matchup will be available to watch on ESPN+.
