Today, the Suffolk County Police Department remembers Detective Carmine Macchia who died on June 15, 1978.
First Precinct officers were in pursuit of a stolen vehicle on June 14, 1978 at approximately 11:30 p.m. Detective Carmine Macchia and Police Officer Al Sabia, who were in an unmarked police vehicle, were involved in a motor vehicle crash with a truck and another police vehicle at the intersection of Straight Path and Sunrise Highway in Lindenhurst.
Detective Macchia and Officer Sabia were rushed to Brunswick Hospital where Detective Macchia died hours later.
Detective Macchia was survived by his wife.
