Suffolk County Police Officer Jocelyn Nuttall was honored with the Theodore Roosevelt Association Police Award during a ceremony at Sagamore Hill in Oyster Bay on Thursday.

The annual award is given to a member of the Suffolk County and Nassau County Police Departments who have overcome a serious injury, disease or disability and have returned to work performing valuable and excellent police service.

Officer Nuttall was on patrol in the Second Precinct when she was seriously injured in a motor vehicle crash after her car was struck head-on by a utility truck on September 8, 2006. Officer Nuttall fractured the first two vertebra of her cervical spine during the crash. She also sustained a concussion and her left arm had several lacerations from the impact. Officer Nuttall was transported by police helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital. She endured three years of physical therapy and wore a halo brace for 14 weeks following the crash. One year after the crash, she returned to work on limited duty.

Today, Officer Nuttall who works in the Second Precinct enjoys training new officers— teaching them the same values and dedication she has proven to have in her position.

Nassau County Police Officer Douglas Bedell was also honored for returning to work after battling Non-Hodgkin’s Diffuse Large Cell B Lymphoma in 2018.

Congratulations to both Officer Nuttall and Officer Bedell. Thank you for your service!
