Members of the Suffolk County Police Department, including our police recruits, turned out on Saturday to support the Lt. Michael Murphy Run Around the Lake in Lake Ronkonkoma hosted by the Rotary Club of the Ronkonkomas.
The race, which draws thousands of runners and raises money to benefit veterans, is named in honor of late Navy SEAL Michael Murphy. Murphy was 29 when he was killed in a fierce firefight in mountainous terrain along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border in Operation Red Wings. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions.
While some of our officers cheered from the sidelines, others put on their running sneakers to participate in the 4-mile run or half marathon while several officers ran with members of the Rolling Thunder Special Needs Program.
