Senator Anthony Palumbo, reflecting on the introduction of new legislation in response to a horrific crime in Babylon, criticized the current bail reform laws in New York, stating, "Measured in changes to the law, and proposed revisions, let alone the societal impact due to a skyrocketing increase in crime, bail reform has to be regarded as one of the worst bills ever passed in New York State history."
Senator Patricia Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick emphasized the need to address gaps in bail laws, stating, "Members of the community should not have to fear that those credibly suspected of such depraved acts may be released back into the community with no way to monitor them."
Assemblyman Mike Durso expressed his determination to rectify broken policies, saying, "I will fight like hell to undo broken policies that provide criminals more protection than they provide our communities."
The proposed bills aim to make the crime of body dismemberment/concealment of a human corpse a bail eligible class E felony and strengthen the use of electronic location monitoring in heinous cases. The legislators believe that these measures are crucial to protecting the citizens of New York and ensuring public safety in the wake of the tragic events in Babylon.
The Republican lawmakers are calling for a repeal of the current bail reform laws, highlighting the need for a comprehensive overhaul to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. They are determined to strengthen the tools available to law enforcement and prosecutors to keep dangerous criminals off the streets and ensure that communities are safe from such horrifying crimes.
