Rep. Nick LaLota (R-Suffolk County) has secured $3 million for the Village of Greenport for the Mitchell Park bulkhead replacement project. In a statement, LaLota expressed his enthusiasm for the allocation, emphasizing the importance of this investment in safeguarding the village against potential flooding and preserving its infrastructure.
"I am delighted to announce the allocation of $3 million in federal funding for the Village of Greenport. This significant investment will facilitate the replacement of the aging Marina bulkhead at Mitchell Park," affirmed LaLota, highlighting the critical nature of the project.
Greenport Mayor Kevin Stuessi also commended the funding, noting the significance of the Mitchell Park Marina as a key tourist destination in New York. Stuessi stated, "The Mitchell Park Marina Bulkhead Replacement federal funding secured by Rep. LaLota through the FY 2024 budget process will enable Greenport to proceed with this project essential to the continuing economic vitality of the Village and region."
The funding, provided by the Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development Appropriations, will allow for the replacement of the existing timber bulkhead in Mitchell Park with a new vinyl bulkhead. Recent inspections have revealed that the current bulkhead is in poor condition and failing, necessitating immediate action to ensure the safety and resilience of the area.
This announcement comes on the heels of LaLota's previous commitment to securing federal funding for infrastructure projects in Suffolk County. Last week, over $1 million in federal funding was allocated for the Town of Riverhead, demonstrating LaLota's dedication to advocating for the needs of the region.
The replacement of the Mitchell Park bulkhead is a crucial step towards enhancing the infrastructure of Greenport and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the village. Through strategic investments like these, communities can mitigate risks, stimulate economic growth, and improve the overall well-being of residents and visitors alike.
