Assemblywoman Jodi Giglio (R,C,I-Riverhead) is hailing the recent Women’s and Young Girls’ Self-Defense Class as a resounding success. The seminar, held in collaboration with the East Coast Black Belt Academy, aimed to empower women with self-defense skills in light of concerning statistics on intimate partner assaults.
In a statement, Giglio expressed her gratitude towards the East Coast Black Belt Academy for their partnership in providing local women with the tools to protect themselves. She emphasized the importance of women being prepared for unsafe situations, stating, "It’s an unfortunate reality of the world for our daughters, where they still have to watch where they go and who they see."
Citing the prevalence of violence against women, particularly in urban areas like New York City, Giglio highlighted the value of women acquiring self-defense skills. She encouraged more women to consider training for their own protection, noting, "New York City continues to have a violence-against-women problem, just like the rest of the world. For a woman to have these skills is invaluable, and I hope more will consider getting some form of training in the future for their own protection."
The initiative comes in response to data from the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services, revealing a high number of intimate partner assault cases reported in Suffolk County. Giglio’s dedication to providing opportunities for women to enhance their safety reflects a proactive approach to addressing public safety concerns and empowering women in the community.
