Suffolk County Executive Romaine has issued a statement in response to the grand jury report regarding the tragic death of Thomas Valva. The report, unveiled by District Attorney Tierney, highlights the failure of previous administration policies and the Suffolk County Child Protective Services (CPS) leadership to prevent the heartbreaking outcome.
"We did not need a grand jury report to know that Suffolk County failed Thomas Valva. Thomas deserved better, and we will do all we can to ensure we never see another case like this in Suffolk County again," expressed Suffolk County Executive Romaine.
Acknowledging the hard work of CPS employees, Romaine emphasized that the report does not reflect the dedication of the majority of individuals working in the department. He stated, "The failed performance of a few who were trusted to protect Thomas Valva – and many other children – does not represent the true mission and spirit of CPS."
Taking immediate action, Romaine announced plans to implement significant changes within the department and bring in new leadership. He also expressed gratitude towards the grand jury for their work on the report and pledged to use their recommendations as a roadmap for much-needed reforms.
The tragic case of Thomas Valva serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of robust child welfare systems and vigilant oversight to prevent such heartbreaking incidents in the future.
