Debbie Metz, the founder of Kyle Meier Mastics Sports Club, also known as Kyle Sports for Special Needs, has been transforming the lives of many children in Long Island for the past 14 years. Alongside her grandson, Kyle Meier, a Mastic Beach resident born with multiple physical disabilities that have hindered his typical growth rate, Metz has pursued a vision common to all parents and grandparents - to see their children loved and accepted.
Metz's ambition was not just limited to acceptance. She also wanted her grandson and other children like him to enjoy the freedom of playing sports and being part of a team. As such, she established a club where she serves as Commissioner. The club offers all children with special needs and disabilities an opportunity to participate in an inclusive sports program. It provides an environment free from stress where children can experience barrier-free play, be part of a team or simply have the chance to play alongside their peers.
In addition to running the club, Metz is continually seeking partnerships within her community, with local government officials and nearby schools. She has played a crucial role in constructing adaptive playgrounds in her area. Her upcoming initiative involves partnering with the William Floyd School District to ensure adaptive bikes are available at schools for easier access during bi-monthly meetups at the middle school.
Metz's philosophy is encapsulated in her own words: “Empower, enjoy, and embrace your children and give them the opportunity to open all the doors to inclusion sports. Spark their interest, motivate their minds, stimulate their hearts, and watch the smiles on their faces.” Her humility, compassion, outstanding work and commitment towards addressing others' needs are indeed commendable.
