Stony Brook Southampton is set to host its first major theatrical production in years at the Avram Theater with the Long Island premiere of "Underground: Hear the Sound of Freedom." The performance will run from January 30 to February 2, 2025. This event marks a new chapter for the theater, which has been a cultural landmark on the East End since the 1980s.

"Underground: Hear the Sound of Freedom," set in 1850, follows an enslaved man's journey toward freedom via the Underground Railroad. Adapted from Akil DuPont's acclaimed short film, it incorporates Negro spirituals and melodies of freedom. The musical has received numerous awards, including "Best Production Winner" at the 2024 New York Theater Festival.

Wendy Pearson, Vice President for Strategic Initiatives and Executive Director of Stony Brook Southampton, stated that productions like "Underground" reflect their commitment to revitalizing Stony Brook Southampton as a hub for education and cultural enrichment. Pearson emphasized that "the arts are deeply connected to education," fostering creativity and understanding.

The theater will also host two special daytime performances for 600 local high school students as part of Black History Month activities beginning February 1. These events aim to deepen students' understanding of American history.

Pearson noted that partnerships with local businesses like Southampton Inn highlight collaboration's importance in supporting arts and sustaining regional growth during off-seasons. She remarked, "By working together, we can create more opportunities that benefit students, residents, and the wider community."

The Avram Theater features a 400-seat venue named after Dr. Morrell “Michael” Avram and his wife Maria. It underwent renovations in 2007 to modernize its facilities for diverse artistic endeavors.

Presented by Stony Brook Southampton and DuPont Productions LLC., with Southampton Inn as Presenting Sponsor, this production aligns with Stony Brook's mission to inspire through world-class theater.

Akil DuPont has garnered recognition throughout his career with numerous awards in film festivals worldwide. His films have been showcased in over 60 countries.

Stony Brook University is recognized as New York’s flagship public university within the SUNY system, known for its academic excellence and research contributions across various fields.
