The William Floyd varsity boys' wrestling team, under the guidance of Coach Tony Mecca, demonstrated strong performance at the recent League I championships. The team secured second place overall, with ten wrestlers finishing in the top four and earning All-League status. Among these were two league champions: Josiah Lors in the 215 lb. category and Jayvyn Johnson in the 138 lb. category.
The following wrestlers have qualified for the upcoming county championships at Stony Brook University:
- League Champions: Jayvyn Johnson (138 lbs.), Josiah Lors (215 lbs.)
- Second Place Finishers: David Barrera (116 lbs.), David Gonzalez (190 lbs.), Aaron Land (170 lbs.), Jack Meyer (131 lbs.)
- Third Place Finishers: Antonio Martin (160 lbs.), Rob Martinez (285 lbs.)
- Fourth Place Finishers: Caleb Holmes (124 lbs.), Ryan Murtha (138 lbs.)
Jack Meyer was honored with the Spartan Award as the most outstanding wrestler in League I. He will serve as flag-bearer at the county championships to recognize this achievement. Meyer's season included numerous top-three finishes and reaching 100 career wins, making him only the seventh wrestler from William Floyd to reach this milestone by his junior year. Coach Mecca noted that Meyer is on track to achieve 115 wins, potentially becoming William Floyd's all-time win leader by his senior year.
Coach Mecca expressed pride in all student-athletes and coaches for their accomplishments and extended best wishes for success at the county championships.
WFHS junior wrestler Jack Meyer celebrated his 100th win last December, marking a significant achievement in program history. He is pictured alongside assistant coaches Brandon Croteau, Cosmo Stoia, Michael Murtha, Ray Passaro, and head coach Tony Mecca.
