Stony Brook Southampton's Avram Theater recently hosted the Long Island premiere of "Underground: Hear the Sound of Freedom." The event included four public performances and two special shows for 600 local high school students. The performances took place from January 30 to February 2, marking a reopening of the campus for community engagement.

Wendy Pearson, vice president for strategic initiatives and executive director of Stony Brook Southampton, emphasized the significance of such productions. “Productions like Underground reflect our commitment to revitalizing Stony Brook Southampton as a hub for education, community outreach, and cultural enrichment,” said Pearson. She highlighted how arts are integral to education by fostering creativity and understanding.

Set in 1850, "Underground: Hear the Sound of Freedom" tells the story of an enslaved man's quest for freedom through the Underground Railroad. Adapted from Akil DuPont’s 2010 short film, the musical has been recognized globally for its compelling score featuring Negro spirituals and freedom melodies. It was awarded “Best Production Winner” at the 2024 New York Theater Festival.

Akil DuPont has gained recognition as a storyteller in theater and film with numerous accolades, including two Student Emmys. His works have been showcased in over 60 countries. DuPont remarked on the importance of experiencing history through theater: “It’s one thing to read it and to have someone to tell you about it. It’s another thing, I think, to experience it,” he said.

The Avram Theater's hosting of "Underground" marks its first major theatrical performance in years, signaling a renewed focus on cultural activities at this East End landmark. Named after Dr. Morrell “Michael” Avram and his wife Maria, long-time arts patrons who supported its renovation in 2007, the theater is equipped for diverse artistic events.

The presentation was made possible by Stony Brook Southampton and DuPont Productions LLC with sponsorship from Southampton Inn. Additional support came from local entities such as Stony Brook Medicine Community Medical Group and Stony Brook University Office of Diversity, Inclusion and Intercultural Initiatives (DI3).
