Stony Brook University is set to host a regional workshop focused on grant application writing, organized by the Humanities Institute at Stony Brook (HISB). Scheduled for February 27, 2025, the event will feature Dr. John Paul Christy, senior director of U.S. Programs at the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS), as the keynote speaker.

The workshop aims to support researchers in arts, humanities, and social sciences by offering insights into crafting successful grant and fellowship applications. Participants can expect presentations on the grant process, a mock selection panel, and optional one-on-one consultations with Dr. Christy.

Janet Ward, professor of philosophy and associate provost for Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences Initiatives, highlighted the significance of such events: “The exceptional work of humanities-based scholarship in all fields advances our understanding of complex lived histories... Stony Brook University’s grant-writing workshop in the humanities... will provide an invaluable opportunity for faculty... to learn how to submit more competitive applications.”

Michael Rubenstein, director of HISB and associate professor in the College of Arts and Sciences Department of English emphasized HISB's mission: “At the Humanities Institute at Stony Brook (HISB) our mission is to support and promote the work of our Humanities faculty... One of our efforts is exemplified in the upcoming ACLS Regional Grant-Writing Workshop for scholars in the Humanities.”

The event is sponsored by both the Office of the Provost and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. It will take place at Stony Brook University's Wang Center. Attendance is free but requires registration; one-to-one consultations are limited.

Stony Brook University stands as New York's flagship public university within the State University of New York (SUNY) system. Known for its research-intensive environment and commitment to academic excellence, it ranks #58 overall among national universities according to U.S. News & World Report.
