Zariel Macchia achieved her seventh state championship at the New York State Track & Field Championships held on March 8, 2025, at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island. Representing William Floyd High School, Macchia secured victory in the 3,000-meter run with a new national-best time of 9:21.73.
Macchia faced challenges prior to this achievement. She was initially disqualified from her final indoor track race due to a technicality involving college student athletes but managed to overcome these hurdles through legal action to compete in the championships.
In addition to her individual success in the 3,000-meter event, she contributed to a team victory in the 4,000-meter distance medley relay. Alongside three other runners from Suffolk County, Macchia ran the anchor leg of 1,500 meters and helped secure first place against teams across New York State. She also competed in the 1,000-meter run and finished third with a time of 2:46.95.
Looking ahead, Macchia and her teammates are set to participate in the Nike Indoor Nationals track and field competition at The Armory in New York City this weekend. She will compete in several events including the 5K and mile races as well as the 1,600-sprint medley relay with teammates Samantha Seaman, Allana Morgan, and Angelle Sainteus. Additionally, Coral Macchia will participate in the middle school mile event.
Congratulations were extended to Zariel for her accomplishments and best wishes for future competitions.
