On May 21, 2025, Brookhaven Town Supervisor Daniel J. Panico received a $20 million check from Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine to support the development of a new sewer district in Mastic Beach. The funding aims to revitalize the neglected downtown area by constructing a wastewater treatment plant and pump stations. This initiative will replace outdated septic systems and facilitate redevelopment efforts in the Mastic-Mastic Beach region.
Supervisor Panico emphasized the importance of this funding, stating, “This is more than funding. It’s the foundation for the future of Mastic Beach.” He credited the partnership with Suffolk County for enabling much-needed infrastructure improvements that promise long-term revitalization.
The American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) provides these funds to help maintain local drinking water quality and protect Pattersquash Creek, aligning with key environmental priorities for the community.
Efforts have been underway for years to establish the Mastic Beach Sewer District, intended to serve both the Neighborhood Road Redevelopment Area and adjacent parcels along Mastic Road. The treatment facility will be built on a 6.2-acre section of land previously used as Shirley Links golf course, which is already owned by Brookhaven Town.
In partnership with The Beechwood Organization, plans are set to redevelop 47 acres of downtown Mastic Beach. This project envisions up to 630 new housing units, alongside significant commercial and community spaces, complemented by new parking structures. Progress on this transformative plan has been hindered by the lack of a sewer system until now.
Councilwoman Karen Dunne Kesnig expressed gratitude for Suffolk County’s financial contribution: “It’s always a good day when our partner in government, the County of Suffolk, gives us a check for $20 million to help defray the cost of the new sewer district.” She acknowledged that advancing this project would not be possible without these funds and noted widespread appreciation within the Mastic Beach community.
