The inauguration week for Andrea Goldsmith, the seventh president of the State University of New York at Stony Brook, began with a fireside chat featuring SUNY Chancellor John B. King Jr. on April 11. The event took place at Stony Brook Southampton and included discussions about the university’s contributions and future vision.
During the conversation, Chancellor King praised Stony Brook’s status as the flagship campus in the nation’s largest public higher education system and outlined its role in supporting scholarship, diversity, economic impact, and workforce development for SUNY’s 395,000 students across New York State.
King highlighted areas where Stony Brook leads innovation such as quantum networking, artificial intelligence, health sciences, medicine, marine science, and climate studies. President Goldsmith spoke about a $300 million investment from Governor Kathy Hochul to develop a quantum hub on campus and shared her goal to establish Long Island as “Silicon Island,” inspired by technology centers on the West Coast.
Students attending described their excitement at being part of this milestone event. “This was an incredible look behind the scenes of a major university,” said Cosette Bedoya from Westbury who is pursuing a master’s degree in speech-language pathology at Stony Brook’s School of Health Professions. Anthony ‘Rocco’ Maner from Lowville said: “Not many students get to be part of a presidential inauguration and meet both the president and the chancellor.” Antonia McFarlane from Dix Hills added: “I’m excited to see where President Goldsmith takes the university next.”
The fireside chat also marked the start of “Southampton Dialogues,” a new series intended to showcase innovation at Stony Brook Southampton. Other opening day events included a reception titled “Discover Stony Brook Southampton” at Chancellors Hall and an evening concert by TONEWALL—the New York City Gay Men’s Chorus’ a cappella band—at Avram Theater.
