The Town of Brookhaven has introduced a film plastic recycling drop-off program as part of its efforts to improve sustainability and recycling practices. The initiative is being conducted in partnership with the Town of Smithtown and Trex, a company that uses recycled materials in its composite lumber products.

Film plastics include items such as plastic bags, newspaper sleeves, case wrapping, bread bags, bubble wrap, air pillows, resealable storage bags, produce bags, and plastic shipping envelopes. These materials should not be placed in household recycling bins but can now be brought to two designated drop-off sites managed by the Town of Brookhaven.

The drop-off locations are:
– Brookhaven Town Hall (3rd Floor – Department of Recycling & Sustainable Materials Management), 1 Independence Hill, Farmingville. Open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
– Brookhaven Solid Waste Management Facility at 350 Horseblock Road. Open Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

All plastics must be clean, dry, and free of food residue before being dropped off. Items not accepted in this program include boat shrink wrap, frozen food bags, chip bags, candy wrappers, and pet food bags.

Collected film plastics are sent to the Town of Smithtown for baling before being delivered to Trex. Trex then incorporates these materials into products such as decking and benches.

Additional information about acceptable items and the program is available at BrookhavenNY.gov/Recycle. Many supermarkets, big box stores, and libraries also participate in similar programs with Trex; a full list of participating locations can be found at NexTrex.com.

Brookhaven provides municipal services focused on community needs and improvements for residents in Suffolk County through accessible programs like this new recycling effort official website. The town also offers recreational opportunities and works on enhancing quality of life under the guidance of its supervisor official website.
